Why it's so challenging to stroll in Indian cities
In India, if you ask a pedestrian how many challenges they've encountered on a footpath, they may not have the ability to matter them - but they will certainly inform you that most footpaths remain in bad problem.
This is what Arun Pai says he discovered when he began asking individuals about their experience strolling on the roads of his city, Bengaluru (previously Bangalore), in southerly India.
This month he set up a "enjoyable challenge" - called the 'world's lengthiest footpath run' - which welcomed individuals to stroll or jog on an 11km (8 miles) extend of footpath and take down all the challenges they encountered, such as hawkers, trash or broken pieces of concrete. Mr Pai, that is the creator of Bangalore Strolls, a charitable that advertises strolling, is amongst several resident activists that are pressing to earn the country's roadways more pedestrian-friendly.

They also learned that the footpaths provided new opportunities for ladies and lower-income teams, assisting them conserve money as well.
The survey highlighted how individuals with impairments and ladies might have nuanced requirements from footpaths which tailoring improvements to satisfy their needs could improve ease of access and equity.

Geetam Tiwari, a teacher of civil design, says that the main problem is that too a lot focus is offered to refixing the problem of car blockage on roadways.
"To improve the flow of traffic, authorities often limit footpaths or eliminate them completely," she says. Ms Tiwari says that this approach is troublesome because doing so makes it challenging for pedestrians to access public transport systems, such as buses and metros, which can take the stress off the roadways.
"It might appear counter-intuitive, but enabling the blockage to continue and focussing on improving facilities for pedestrians will help refix the traffic problem over time," she says.
Ms Tiwari also says that the government federal government should make it mandatory for specifies to implement the standards issued by the Indian Roadway Congress - a nationwide organisation that lays down designing requirements for roadways and freeways.
She says that cities can also implement their own Non-Motorised Transport Plan (NMTP) to produce better facilities for bibikers and pedestrians.
"Currently, just a handful of cities in India have try out a NMTP but its time more cities step up to home plate," she includes.
